Custom Boat Restoration & Yacht Carpentry: Transforming a 42’ Eastbay
Project Vision: Built for a Single-Owner Lifestyle
The 42′ Eastbay is widely respected for its performance in rough water and its practical, well-balanced layout. This made it an ideal candidate for a full restoration and interior transformation.
In this case, the owner, an experienced yachtsman, purchased the vessel with a clear objective: create a fully customized liveaboard designed specifically for solo living. Every decision in this project centered on improving usability, maximizing space, and creating a layout that supports day-to-day life onboard with comfort and efficiency.
Reconfiguring the Interior for Function
Forward Stateroom Transformation
Work began in the forward master stateroom, where the goal was to open up space and improve accessibility.
✓ Lowered the berth and converted it from a double to a single, creating additional usable room
✓ Removed doorways to improve flow and accessibility
✓ Expanded the head entry by replacing a tight pocket door with a full door frame for safer, easier access
Salon & Living Area Redesign
The salon and guest areas were reimagined to better support everyday living rather than occasional use.
✓ Converted the guest stateroom into an extension of the main salon
✓ Built a custom L-shaped breakfast nook for comfort and functionality
✓ Installed a wardrobe locker with hanging storage and integrated drawers
Functional Enhancements Through Yacht Carpentry
Precision carpentry played a key role in making the space both practical and refined.
✓ Added a handrail from the galley to the salon stairs to improve safety underway
✓ Replaced the fixed helm seat with a removable option to open up floor space
✓ Reconfigured the air conditioning system with a new vent and custom teak grille to match existing finishes
Folding Desk & Workspace Integration
To support remote work and onboard planning, a custom folding desk was designed and built.
✓ Provides a comfortable, ergonomic workspace
✓ Folds away cleanly when not in use
✓ Maximizes space without sacrificing functionality
Precision Woodwork & Finishing
A consistent, high-quality finish was essential throughout the project.
✓ Matched all new woodwork to the existing teak interior
✓ Built components to withstand the marine environment
✓ Maintained a clean, cohesive look across all living spaces
Collaboration: Bringing the Vision to Life
As project lead Ryan explained: “The success of this project came down to clear direction from the owner and our ability to execute those details exactly as envisioned.”
Close collaboration defined every stage of the build. The owner was involved throughout the process, allowing adjustments in real time and ensuring that every feature aligned with how the boat would actually be used.
The Result: A Purpose-Built Liveaboard
This 42′ Eastbay has been transformed into a fully customized liveaboard tailored for one.
✓ Increased usable space and storage
✓ Improved movement and accessibility throughout the vessel
✓ Added flexible, multi-use features
✓ Created a modern, highly personalized interior
Final Thoughts
This project highlights what’s possible when thoughtful design meets skilled craftsmanship. By focusing on how the owner lives—not just how the boat looks—the result is a space that feels natural, efficient, and built with purpose. For yacht owners and captains based along Florida’s Gulf Coast from Tampa Bay through Sarasota and down to Naples, projects like this show how the right restoration and custom carpentry can completely transform how a vessel functions day to day. Whether preparing for extended cruising or full-time liveaboard use, a well-executed refit can turn a capable boat into a space that truly fits your life.
