Darker Maple, Brighter Style: Skilled Yacht Carpentry gives this Princess V50 a Fresh And Modern Look
Even the most well-loved yachts can start to show their age over time and that was the case with this beautiful Princess V50. The interior, though still in good shape structurally, no longer matched the owner’s evolving taste and vision for the space. That’s when they reached out to our team at Big Ocean Marine with a clear goal: Refresh and modernize the yacht’s interior, starting with an upgrade to the flooring.
Why choose a darker refinishing tone?
Choosing a richer, darker tone for the floors wasn’t just a design choice- it was a smart choice. Deeper tones are becoming increasingly popular in luxury yacht interiors as they bring:
- A sense of elegance and depth
- A crisp contrast to lighter cabinetry and upholstery
- Practicality as they do a great job hiding everyday scuffs and dirt
On the Princess V50, which already has a bright, open interior and large windows, going darker did not make the space feel smaller. The new flooring actually created a beautiful contrast and gave the salon and galley a more refined and distinct look.
Our Yacht Carpentry Refinishing Process Step-by-Step
This wasn’t a quick color swap-updating a high-end yacht’s flooring is a careful process that takes skill and patience. Here’s how we brought the owner’s vision to life:
- Stripping the Old Finish
We started by fully removing the existing finish. On a boat like this, that’s no small task marine-grade finishes are made to last. Our team worked carefully to avoid damaging the maple wood underneath. - Sanding Back to Bare Wood
Next, especially in the galley (a high-traffic area), we sanded the floors down to bare maple. This created a clean, even surface to help the new stain go on smoothly and evenly. - Color Matching & Staining
This is probably one of the most challenging components of the process as it is often difficult to achieve uniformity across all surfaces. Staining both the salon and galley floors to a darker hue required careful color testing and adjustments. Maple can be particularly tricky to stain due to its density and grain pattern. Our team ran several tests to find the perfect shade, and after some careful adjustments, we achieved a warm, even finish the owner loved. - Finishing It Off
Once the color was just right, we sealed the floors with a high-quality marine varnish. The satin finish adds a soft sheen, protects against UV rays, and holds up to life at sea-all while letting the natural beauty of the maple shine through.
Yacht carpentry transformation
The darker maple floors anchor the interior, creating contrast with lighter elements and elevating the overall ambiance. The space now feels modern, elegant, and uniquely personal-a perfect reflection of the owner’s style. This truly highlights the value that skilled yacht carpentry can bring to the look and feel of a yacht.
