Beneteau Sailboat Restoration & Teak Maintenance

Beneteau teak refinishing boat repair PortCharlotteThis project gave us another opportunity to work on a Beneteau sailboat—and as always, we enjoyed learning more about why our clients choose their specific vessels. Beneteau has a long and respected history, dating back to the 1880s when they began building fishing boats. Over time, the company expanded its offerings to include a wide range of models, from comfortable cruising yachts and performance-oriented racers to luxurious ocean cruisers.

Beneteau is known for offering excellent value and is consistently praised for its thoughtfully designed interiors—many of which can be customized to suit the owner’s preferences. Their boats are also appreciated for their user-friendly layouts and systems.

While the owners of this particular sailboat had taken excellent care of it, the exterior teak had naturally weathered and turned grey from prolonged UV exposure. This is common on older boats and typically requires professional maintenance to restore the wood and prevent further degradation. In addition, the owner asked us to modify cabinetry to allow for easier removal and replacement of the sail drive.

Teak Cleaning & Restoration Process

Here’s a breakdown of the teak maintenance and refinishing work we completed:

  • Careful Cleaning: All teak surfaces were gently washed using a dedicated teak cleaner to lift dirt and surface buildup.
  • Sanding: We sanded the teak to restore its natural color and achieve a smooth, even surface.
  • Sealing: A high-quality teak sealer was applied to protect the wood from UV and moisture damage.
  • Deck Repairs: Areas where the teak deck was lifting or separating from the hull were repaired, and all joints were re-caulked to ensure a watertight finish.
  • Trim Restoration: Trim pieces received the same treatment—cleaning, sanding, and sealing—to ensure a consistent look across the deck.

Teak Maintenance Tips for Boat Owners

Proper teak care not only extends the life of your decking but also keeps your boat looking its best. Here are some helpful tips for owners:

  • Establish a Maintenance Schedule: Routine cleaning helps prevent mildew, dirt buildup, and long-term wear.
  • Use the Right Tools: Clean teak using a soft-bristle brush and mild soap or a teak-specific cleaner. Always scrub against the grain, not with it.
  • Avoid Harsh Equipment: Do not use pressure washers or stiff brushes, as they can damage the delicate grain of teak wood.
  • Inspect Caulking Regularly: Cracked or missing caulking should be repaired promptly to prevent water intrusion and further damage.
  • Leave Refinishing to the Pros: Sanding teak incorrectly—with the wrong tools, technique, or grit—can create low spots or damage the wood. Professional refinishing ensures a smooth, even result.
