Vingilo

Refinished teak toe rail.

This classic Hinkley 49’ is a dual cockpit model with a craftsmanship pedigree.
The boat had unfortunately sustained storm damage and needed restoration and maintenance of all its exterior brightwork.

As we worked on this project, we were able to really appreciate the many attributes of this quality-built vessel that provide high satisfaction to the owners.  A few of the highlights included:

-A dual cockpit model with steering and all lines running to the center cockpit. The aft cockpit opens from the owner’s stateroom which allows for a beautiful and functional space.
-A spacious center cockpit providing better visibility from the helm while also allowing optimal weather protection from the dodger and bimini top
-An aft cabin design that is extremely comfortable as it has plenty of standing headroom and lots of storage space. Hatches and ports are thoughtfully placed to provide excellent lighting. A companionway also opens out into the stern cockpit
-The location of the galley on the port side between bow and stern allows for less movement and much more comfortable cruising.
-Access to the engine room is excellent as there are many well-positioned doors and access panels.
-A solid hull design and built that withstands the test of time. It can be motor powered in lighter conditions but offers excellent upwind performance with a higher breeze.

What we did..

The project consisted of refinishing all on deck teak in Awlwood and repairing the storm damaged toe rail.

The first step was the removal of all the hardware from the teak including winches, t-track on toe rail, cleats, rails, the life raft and various brackets. After everything was removed, the old varnish(Bristol) was stripped away and preliminary sanding was completed.

The boat was then washed thoroughly to remove the gray and achieve better color consistency.

Epoxy repairs and scarfing in new material were completed.  This included repairs to the toe rail damage that occurred while the boat rubbed on pilings during the hurricane.

Everything was very carefully sanded in preparation for Awlwood Clear Primer.

After the final sanding was completed, the boat was finally ready for brightwork. Primer and 10+ coats of Awlwood were applied to give the boat a fresh new look.

Best described by Big Ocean Marine’s owner and carpenter-Ryan Schaap- “This boat repair and restoration project provided much satisfaction as we were able to see the transformation of all the beautiful brightwork. The beautiful wood truly makes this boat stand out. It is very elegant while also a comfortable and functional vessel”
