Boat Interior Restoration & Yacht Carpentry: 55’ Sunseeker Interior Refinishing Project
When it comes to boat repair and restoration, few aspects are as challenging and rewarding as interior woodwork and refinishing. As owner and experienced yacht carpenter Ryan explains, “Wood species like teak and walnut can develop orange and reddish tones, and matching the wood grain can be a real challenge. But when it’s done right, it can completely transform the look and feel of a boat.” At Big Ocean Marine, our team combines expert yacht carpentry with advanced marine finishing techniques to deliver stunning, long-lasting results that enhance both the beauty and value of every vessel.
The Challenge: Foggy and Milky Interior Wood Finish
This 55’ Sunseeker featured a beautifully designed interior with a clear wood finish that had lost its clarity over time. In multiple areas, the finish had turned milky and foggy, diminishing the elegance of the yacht’s interior.
This type of failure is common in boat interior restoration, especially in enclosed marine environments. Possible contributing factors included:
-Long-term exposure to high humidity
-Limited ventilation in interior spaces
-A finish that was not marine-grade or designed for prolonged moisture exposure
Regardless of the cause, the result was a cloudy appearance that no longer reflected the yacht’s original quality.
Custom Yacht Carpentry & Interior Refinishing
Rather than applying a temporary fix, our team approached this project with a long-term boat restoration and modernization mindset. The process relied on precision yacht carpentry techniques, including exact templating, tight joinery, controlled veneer application, and climate-managed finishing to ensure long-term durability and a flawless, high-gloss result.
Custom Panel Fabrication
We fabricated custom replacement panels using Baltic birch plywood, a material we selected for its strength and durability. Made from exterior-grade plies with no voids, it provides long-lasting performance in marine environments. To preserve the yacht’s original aesthetic, we applied a walnut veneer that seamlessly matched the existing interior, maintaining both color and grain consistency.
High-End Marine Finishing Process
To ensure durability and a flawless appearance, we followed a multi-step professional finishing process.
-The walnut veneer was applied with a vacuum bag pressing system to ensure a uniform appearance
-We built up multiple layers of clear epoxy to seal off the wood and resist moisture
-Finished with a high-gloss sprayed urethane, designed for marine interiors
The result was a deep, crystal-clear finish that restored the richness of the walnut while providing protection against future humidity issues.
The Result: A Modernized, High-Gloss Yacht Interior
This Sunseeker interior now reflects the level of craftsmanship expected in premium boat wood work and yacht interior restoration. The foggy finish is gone, replaced with a sleek, modern look that enhances both the value and enjoyment of the vessel.
